Ian Westbrook – Scenic Designer

ian-westbrook-2009-photoIan studied Theatre Design at Nottingham Trent University.

For the Lord Delfont Group he designed the Lenny Henry; The Nolan Sisters; Cannon & Ball and Dick Emery Shows. After seasons at Nottingham Playhouse, Leicester and Theatre Royal Plymouth, Ian became the set designer/scenic artist with the Theatre Royal Norwich and since 1986, Cromer Pavilion’s Seaside Special summer shows.

Since 1985 his scenery and prop construction company 3D Creations in Norfolk have created well over four hundred and fifty operas, musicals, plays and events that include Sir Peter Hall’s Blithe Spirit at London’s Savoy Theatre; Michael Flatley’s Feet of Flames world tour; Evita and Chicago in Lebanon’s amphitheatre. Ian has also created special fire effects for Chichester Festival and Birmingham Stage Company, English National Opera, the Broadway musical See Saw by Cy Colman & Dorothy Fields and designs for American illusionist David Blaine. They were also responsible for the design and manufacture of Davenport’s Magic Kingdom, a 2200 sq foot museum of magic & illusion in North Norfolk.

Ian has designed for rock and pop music arena tours for Iron Maiden, (five  world tours); Robbie Williams; Pete Waterman; West Life; Blur; The Spice Girls; Peter Gabriel; Thomas the Tank Engine and Disney (TV) Corporation; Sony Media and five Royal commissions for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Sandringham Museum.

Other credits include designs for the UK tours and London’s West End productions of Proof; The Horrible Histories; Treasure Island for Birmingham Stage Co. and set location work for Pirate’s in the Caribbean (St. Thomas Island).  For Qdos Entertainment; Peter Pan; Cinderella; Sleeping Beauty; Robinson Crusoe, along with new musicals by Jon Conway for the USA Celebrity Cruise lines called Hollywood The Land of Make Believe, Sirens, Star Factory, West End run of All the Fun of the Fair, Garrick Theatre London and UK tours; Santa Clause and the Christmas Adventure, Ambassadors Theatre London, and special effect props for TVs Misfits. Ian created set decoration for Ellie Goulding on The X-Factor as well as the set for Aladdin at Coventry Belgrade Theatre.

Ian has designed Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) world arena tour. Design & builds for the new P&O. Britannia the largest British cruise ship and Cunard Queen Elizabeth, Mary and Victoria ships.

Recently 3D Creations built sets for Sangre at The Riverside Studios, London and  Ian designed and created the Crystal Diamond and Crown, along with the six meter high National Beacon that was lit outside Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert. This is Ian’s ninth year designing the new pantomime sets for the Birmingham Hippodrome; the largest and most lavish Pantomimes in the world.

This Year saw our Managing Director Ian Westbrook pick up several awards including:

  • Best staging and Set for Cinderealla at the London Palladium – The Great British Pantomime Awards
  • Pantomime Of The Year – Cinderella at the London Palladium
  • TWO nominations for the Olivier Awards.
